What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who has completed advanced coursework and clinical education beyond that required of the generalist registered nurse (RN) role.

Nurse Practitioners have the authority to practice independently and:
  • Perform comprehensive and focused physical examinations
  • Diagnose and treat acute illnesses and injuries
  • Provide immunizations
  • Manage chronic health problems
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests (x-rays, MRIs, etc.) and laboratory tests
  • Prescribe medications and therapies
  • Perform procedures
  • Educate and counsel families regarding healthy lifestyles and healthcare options
